Hyung-ki Joo Ancient Childhood

Ancient Childhood from “Childhood” – an Album of 10 pieces for Piano. (2021) by Hyung-ki Joo.
👉Composer about his work: “For the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Tonhalle Zürich Orchestra, I was commissioned, along with my collaborative partner, Aleksey Igudesman, to compose new works for orchestra. One of the works we completed together was, “The
Historical and Hysterical Guide to the Orchestra”, which tells the story of instruments in relation to the history of the world. While researching, I came across a tune which was considered to be the oldest recorded melody in the world. I imagined it being sung by children from that ancient era in time, and it made me wonder how childhood might have changed over the many ages since the birth of that melody.”
These ten pieces were composed between 2014 and 2021. The World Premiere of “Childhood”, as the complete album of 10 piano pieces, took place on June 21st, 2021, at the Oculus, World Trade Center, New York City. The performance was produced by Music Traveler as part of an event to celebrate Make Music Day- (Fête de la Musique)- and the sheet music was also published on the same day.
